IEC 61508 / IEC 61511
IEC 61508 is the main SIL standard and will be used a.o. by vendors of safety related components (sensors, logic solvers, final elements).
IEC 61511 is the SIL standard for the Process Industry.
We are currently waiting for the formal issue of the 2e edition of IEC 61511.
The SIL standards exist about 20 years. But the impact in the process Industry is huge!
As an example, IEC 61511 is translated in the Russian language and it’s use in Russia is mandatory.
The SIL standards define the requirements for Instrumental safeguards.
But the safety lifecycle requirements are addressed, form project definition up to decommissioning of the instrumental safeguards.
